Alpaca

We have ten alpacas on the farm, five hembra (female), three machos (male) and one cria (alpaca babies) that were born in the beginning of July 2023.

————————

It is difficult to predict whether an alpaca is pregnant or not. But if she is extra grumpy or spits at the male when he gets too close, it is a sign that she is pregnant. The alpaca is pregnant for anywhere from 335 to 370 days, and usually gives birth to only 1 cria.

————————

Alpacas are great grazing animals and produce fine wool that can be spun into extra warm and light yarn. They are a camel species originally from South America, yet they thrive outside in all kinds of weather and rarely enter their stables.

Meet our alpacas

Kamelen

Meet the animals! Here is the whole herd of alpacas. The first six are females and the last four are males. Fuzzy is the youngest, he was born in July 2023.

Every alpaca has its own personality. Kamelen is our sunbather, she loves the sun and do not mind just laying flat in a sunny spot all day. More than once we have had to check that she is alive, when she was just comitted to her sunbathing. Maloo minds her own buissiness, she is not the most social, but she is the herds best mother. She is calm, births easy and is pacient with her little ones. Night shadow is our foodie, she will gladly eat from your hand, and is most often seen with grass in her mouth. Adele and Fluffy the faces of the herd, Adele with here teeth sticking out looking fabulous and Fluffy, always with a smile on her face. Jordebær is the most curious one, she sometimes likes to sniff your hair. Compared to Vanilla, who was born just some weeks after Jordebær, he is very very shy and keeps in the background. He is spending his time with Balloo, the other male, and likes to observe what Balloo is doing first before he does anything by himself. Balloo is the only grown male, but he is very timid, and is often bossed around by the ladies or the goats. Fuzzy is our baby, and extremely social. He eats from the hand and likes to be petted.
